How does psychosynthesis work?

Founded by Roberto Assagioli, Psychosynthesis is a spiritual and holistic approach to psychology that developed from psychoanalysis. Assagioli was largely inspired by Freud’s idea of the repressed mind and Jung’s theories of the collective unconscious. Psychosynthesis is a psychospiritual psychology drawing upon a holistic model of the psyche. It offers an approach to human development which is both profound and hopeful and is oriented toward health and potential rather than pathology. This approach enables empowering transformational change in individuals and groups. While it acknowledges and works with the pain and suffering inherent in personal history and in the human condition, Psychosynthesis also provides a path that empowers our human ability to create harmony, synthesis, and full self-expression in our personal and every other aspect of our life. Psychosynthesis can also been described as a psychology of the Self, as it considers that the realms of human experience also include matters of soul and spirit, alongside physical and emotional experiences as well as thoughts and mental processes.

Graphic of a quote by Roberto Assagiolo - "Psychosynthesis is a method of psychlogical development and self realisation for those who refuse to remain the slave of their own inner phantasms or of external influences, who refuse to submit passively to the play of psychological forces which is going on within them, and who are determined to become the masters of their own lives."

At a basic level, Psychosynthesis is a type of talking therapy. It involves introspection, empathic self-exploration and attempting to meet the unconscious 'self'. The aim of Psychosynthesis is to allow a person to consciously explore various aspects of the Self in order to increase personal insight and allow for understanding, Self-compassion, healing, growth and development. Guided imagery, symbolic artwork, and journal writing might all be used to help an individual become more introspective. Other techniques that can be used in Psychosynthesis include meditation, gestalt techniques, and encouraging creativity. It holds the sacredness of the soul and the fact that the client’s own internal wisdom is the wisest element in the therapy room.

At the heart of Psychosynthesis therapy is the client and psychotherapist relationship, where the power actually lies with the client, while the Psychosynthesis counsellor or life coach works with the client as a guide in her or his own healing journey.
